*By Adrian Ashurst* Established in March 2003, Cambian Healthcare is the biggest provider of intensive psychiatric rehabilitation in the United Kingdom. More than 60 Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) use Cambian Healthcare to provide intensive psychiatric rehabilitation for their patients. Cambian provide an intensive programme for sectioned patients stepping down from secure facilities or acute mental hospitals. Typically, patients admitted to Cambian facilities have been diagnosed with the following conditions: # Schizophrenia # Schizo-affective disorders # Bipolar affective disorders # Depression Most patients are sectioned under the Mental Health Act (1983) including Section 3, 37, 37/41. Many have been long-stay patients in the National Health Service (NHS). Cambian Healthcare provides: # High therapeutic staff ratios (2 patients: 1 staff) Patients are pre-assessed prior to admission and the staffing levels are constantly reviewed. # A proven active care programme of psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy
