Co-operative homecare spreads across the North

Sunderland Home Care Associates (SHCA,) a Wearside independent provider of homecare has launched an umbrella organisation ­ Care and Share Associates (CASA) to extend its care model in North Tyneside, Newcastle and Middlesbrough. CASA has been established with help and support from Social Enterprise Sunderland and Economic Partnership’s Ltd. SHCA founder member and general manager Margaret Elliot said the organisation had been set up 10 years ago as a workers¹ co-operative. A contract was secured with Sunderland Social Services to deliver 450 hours per week of personal care to a range of people, including elderly people, hospital discharge patients and people with disabilities. “Recognised nationally as an example of good practice, SHCA now employs some 160 workers and delivers 3,800 hours per week of care,” Ms Elliot said.
