The English Community Care Association (ECCA) has welcomed the intention set out in the DH consultation Caring for Our Future that direct payments for residential care will be implemented in April 2016.

“We have long campaigned for people to have the right to spend their direct payment in long term residential care and we are delighted that this choice will now be available to people from April 2016,” said ECCA chief executive Prof. Martin Green.

“There is no reason why people should not have the choice to spend their direct payment in this way if they wish. “We will work closely with the DH in supporting the ‘trailblazer’ councils looking at the practicalities of implementing this policy change.”
