Gordon Brown loses our Trusts

To listen to Gordon Brown’s budget speech, you would think that economically, everything is splendid and taxes have remained the same, possibly even lower for a number of people, but when you take time to read the detail accompanying the speech, it is clear that he has been poking around the legislation, which will result in significantly increased tax bills for some individuals. Areas the Chancellor has tinkered with, include: # Retrospective legislation to block “bonus” schemes, # Changing the rules regarding Trusts, # Removing the zero per cent starting rate for corporation tax. While the latter of these was expected following his December statement, the other two were nasty shocks for those affected. Retrospective legislation to block bonus schemes was threatened but, generally, it was felt that the Government would not introduce it because it would have to admit that its legislation was totally flawed.
