The 6th UK Dementia Congress and 2nd National Dementia Care Awards 2011

A celebration of the best in dementia care.

The almost 800 people who attended the 6th UK Dementia Congress showed that dementia is very much the area of social care which no one can afford to ignore.

Sponsored by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK's leading dementia-focussed care providers, the Congress was held in Liverpool at the superb BT Convention Centre. First time Academic Sponsor was the University of Bradford which houses one of the UK?s leading academic centres, headed by Professor Murna Downs. ?We are delighted to have such an eminent department involved?, said Dr Richard Hawkins, editor-in-chief of Congress organisers the Journal of Dementia Care and Caring Times, ?and look forward to building such important partnerships in the future?.

Another partnership which worked successfully was with the Alzheimer's Society and with Bupa. The Alzheimer's Society contributed its own dedicated Parallel Stream, and also brought many of the people living with dementia who added so much to the event. The partnership with Bupa worked very well, with Bupa contributing significantly to the planning and content of the Congress.

The presence of Paul Burstow, Minister of State for Care Services, was particularly appreciated by all present. Mr Burstow spoke passionately and knowledgeably about dementia, emphasising that the Government values the National Dementia Strategy and is intent on pursuing its targets including that of a two-thirds reduction in the use of antipsychotic medication. Early diagnosis of dementia will be given priority, he said, announcing a National Dementia Awareness Campaign.

The 2nd National Dementia Care Awards 2011

The Congress included, for the 2nd year running, the National Dementia Care Awards, which were held at the Crown Plaza Hotel and hosted by CBBC television presenters, Dick and Dom.

Around 400 people attended the glittering Gala Evening to watch 12 Awards being given to some of the best people working in the sector, including Best Dementia Care Team, Best Dementia Care Home Manager and Best Dementia Care Home to name but a few.
