| Foundations laid for new extracare community |
|
Caring Times, February 2010
|
The foundations have been laid for Sanctuary Group's state-of-the-art extra care housing development in Babbacombe, Torquay.
Working in partnership with Torbay Council and Torbay Care Trust, Sanctuary is building a 45-apartment complex on the site of the former Dunboyne Care Home in St Marychurch Road, which closed in 2007.
Sanctuary's extra care centres provide an alternative to conventional care homes, where residents have their own apartments in an established community and, as their care needs increase so too will the level of support provided. Residents will retain their independence but have the peace of mind that comes with knowing care and support is always on hand.
The three-to-five storey complex will include a communal lounge, multi-function room, hairdressing salon, rooms for assisted bathing, laundry facilities, a caf, restaurant and bistro, a gym as well as large gardens and mobile scooter parking. There will also be facilities for computer access and health and fitness classes.
The new building will be contemporary in appearance and is in keeping with the art deco design of many of the buildings in the bay. It has also been designed to incorporate features to promote environmental sustainability, including solar panels and a ground heat pump which will provide 10 per cent of the building's energy requirements.
The land the site is being built on was provided by the council. As well as its own investment, Sanctuary Group also secured additional funding from the Department of Health and the Homes & Communities Agency.
