Caring Times, February 2010

Altrincham-based architecture practice Pozzoni has received planning permission for a new build extracare residential scheme in Dukinfield.
The approved development in Ravensfield by New Charter Housing Trust Group, will replace an existing four-storey bed sit development with a contemporary 31 extra care apartment scheme with communal spaces and landscaped gardens. Work is due to start on site in March 2010.
Pozzoni architects, who work internationally on designing accommodation for older people, have designed a building that complements the existing surroundings and also caters for the changing needs of the proposed residents. The design creates a safe and secure environment where individuals and the wider community can enjoy communal facilities. Residents will benefit from the privacy of their own flat entrance whilst having the security of 24-hour staff support.
The development has been designed on a site with considerable level changes and will consist of a new three-storey building with one and two bedroom units, which are wheelchair accessible. In additionthere is a 247m2 communal wing with a lounge, bistro, a kitchen, staff offices, a hair salon and a wellbeing centre.
The building has been designed in a unique curving form that caters for the shape of the site and the slope of the hill. This will creates a level garden space that faces south, maximising the sun path and ensuring that all apartments benefit from sunshine at some part of the day.
A green, sedum roof is incorporated to the front of the communal area and the courtyard colonnade.
