Choice Care Group chief retires

Caring Times, February 2010

Choice Care Group Chief Executive Paul Gold has stepped down from his position after 17 years with the Reading-based company which runs care homes in Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

Edwina Johnston, the Group's Chief Operating Officer, will take on Paul's responsibilities and David Cole, the Group's chairman, will also be taking on a greater role in the day-to-day management.

Gold retired from the group at the end of December and is set to take up a new role with the company's financial backers, Sovereign Capital, where he will advise on the development of their existing and future healthcare investments. Paul's retirement follows the highly successful organic and acquisitive growth achieved by the group since the management buyout in 2002.

Commenting on Paul's retirement Edwina said: 'We would like to thank Paul for his tremendous vision and commitment over the past 17 years and for building Choice into the leading provider of residential care that it is today. Because of Paul, through Choice, many adults with severe learning difficulties have greatly benefited from the Group's high standards of service and care.' Paul added: 'Having been with Choice from the start, I feel a huge attachment to it - it was always going to be a big decision to move on but it feels like the right time, and I'm handing over a company in great shape to a team I have complete confidence in.

'Since 1992, we have grown from four homes and 26 beds to 39 homes with 303 beds and successfully integrated our two main acquisitions, Truecare and Orchard End.  I feel very proud of what we've achieved here and we couldn't have done it all without the support of the board of directors, the unending encouragement from Sovereign and, in particular, the contribution from every member of our fantastic staff, to whom I am very grateful.

'While I will undoubtedly miss the day-to-day involvement at Choice, Sovereign has got some very interesting ideas and I'm looking forward to helping develop their plans for the future.'
