Website gives operators figures on the cost of absence through illness

Every year sickness absence saddles organisations with 100 employees or more working in care services with a bill of £58,100. That’s the figure provided by a website which is available to all businesses keen to discover the extent of the financial headache they’re left nursing when employees fall ill. In just a few seconds companies can now get a reading based on the industry, postcode, number of employees and average employee salary. www.costofabsence.com has been launched by BUPA Health Insurance, using data from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). The CIPD research shows that in care services, the average number of days lost through absence per employee per annum is 9.9, the average percentage of working time lost is 4.4 percent, and the average annual cost of sickness absence per employee is £581. Ann Greenwood, director of business markets for BUPA, said businesses need to understand the impact that sickness absence can have on them, in terms of their performance, productiv
