Barchester opts out of running the bar in Jersey deal

Barchester Healthcare has acquired the 68-bed Lakeside care home in St Peter, Jersey. A public house called The Mermaid Tavern also comes with the sale, although Barchester intends to get on with the business it is best at ­ providing premium health care ­ and leave the running of the pub to others. Chief executive Mike Parsons said the Lakeside care home fitted with the company¹s overall strategy to ensure an even geographical spread. “This quality care home, in a much sought-after location, will prove a valuable asset and serves to strengthen our portfolio as we develop the business,” said Mr Parsons. “Our main priority now is to gain a better understanding of the local community in Jersey and ensure that the needs of our staff, residents and their families are being fully met.” The former hotel on an expansive 11 acre site in La Rue De La Commune, St Peter, was converted into a care home in 2002.
