Nursing home blaze kills one

Police and fire experts are investigating a fire at a Yorkshire nursing home which left one man dead and another with severe burns. The overnight blaze at the privately-owned Riverview nursing home in Stourton Road, Ilkley trapped the two men, both aged 72, inside. The remainder of the 70 residents were evacuated by staff. A police spokesman said investigators had initially treated the fire as suspicious but this had now been discounted. “We are questioning staff and residents to find out what happened,” the spokesman said. “It is a large nursing home and staff acted very quickly to evacuate the residents from the building.”
