Training survey from CPA

Care assistant training across the residential and nursing home sector is examined in a recent study published by the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA). Written by Dr Gillian Dally and Michael Denniss, Trained to Care is based on a survey of care homes which, say the authors, reveals a very mixed picture. Although 21 per cent of all care assistants possessed an additional training qualification (ATQ), 12 per cent of care homes reported no care assistants holding a ATQ. At the time of the survey, 38 per cent of all care homes paid their care assistants less than £3.60 an hour. However, the authors report that many care homes have well-developed training strategies, and managers recognised the benefits of a trained staff in terms of improved quality of care, staff morale and reduction in staff turnover. “It is clear that training provision across the country is uneven in its availability, and is probably of varying quality,” the authors say. “With the passing of the Care Standards Act 2000, the introduction of
